Smartlogic's Content Intelligence platform is called Semaphore. The platform is used to capture terminology and topics into a hierarchical taxonomy.
Semaphore’s semantic intelligence delivers an improvement in how users find, manage, explore, and use content. Semaphore is used to add quality metadata to content in a consistent manner. This includes identifying named entities in the content such as people or organization names and applying subject information managed as terms in the domain model. Semaphore's subject tagging uses natural language processing and rule-based logic to determine when content is about a subject, not just when it mentions a subject.
Semaphore has resilient, scalable, XML-based web service interfaces that allow the model and classifications to integrate with enterprise content management systems, enterprise search engines, and business process workflow applications – anywhere the semantic mark-up is needed. Applications use Semaphore to understand what the content is about and to describe connections between topics, entities and resources.
The Semaphore platforms consists of four interconnected modules.
- Ontology Manager. Ontology Manager manages the lifecycle of taxonomy, thesauri or ontology development and maintenance.
- Classification and Text Mining Server. The Classification and Text Mining Server generates the rule bases from the Semaphore model and performs content classification. Content classification is the process of analyzing a document and adding metadata 'tags' that describe that document. The metadata tags are sourced from a taxonomy or other form of controlled vocabulary.
- Semantic Enhancement Server. The Semantic Enhancement Server (SES) is a high-speed XML-based index that allows developers to query an ontology or taxonomy in real-time by providing UI components like topic maps, faceted search, visualization, topic pages, and related content to drive an exceptional user experience within search and content management applications.
- Search Application Framework. The Search Application Framework is a collection of web services and tag libraries that exposes core search functionality, like search results and relevance rankings, with the advanced Semaphore capability of taxonomy or entity-based faceted navigation, topic maps and filters, and more. The code is provided as a fully functioning application that is implemented on a technology layer abstracted from the search engine itself.
